Thomas James “Tom” Joyce, Sr. son of the late Thomas Joseph Joyce and Ottillie Tassotti Joyce, of Port Jefferson Station NY passed away on the morning of March 2, 2104 at the Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson. Survived by his wife, Carol; children Thomas, Jr, and his wife Susie; Michael and his wife Jean; Patricia Byrnes and her husband Billy; James and his wife Eileen; and Maryann Palisi and her husband Scott; his brother Father Timothy J Joyce, O.S.B.; and 18 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was born August 10, 1929 and lived many years in Rosedale Queens, but made his home for the last 19 years in Port Jefferson Station.
Tom was a veteran of the U.S. military who served in the Army during the Korean War and was a New York City Police Officer for over two decades. Tom was a devoted family man who adored Carol, his wife of 57 years, coached his children’s sports teams, and always made time for his many grandchildren. One neighbor described him as “an icon who was looked up to by all the neighborhood kids”. Tom was a vocal and enthusiastic sports fan with an encyclopedic knowledge of his favorite team’s statistics. At Infant Jesus Catholic Church he was a daily fixture, where he usually set up for morning mass and was known affectionately as “the commissioner”.
Tom was greatly loved and will be greatly missed, not only by his family, but by all who made his acquaintance.
