STONEVILLE – Sanford Lee Joyce, 80, of 107 White Pine Drive, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Stoneville with Reverend Ward Burch and Reverend Michael Labate officiating. Interment will follow in Stoneville Municipal Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rockingham County Honor Guard and North Carolina National Guard.
Mr. Joyce was born February 17, 1932, in Rockingham County, to the late Joseph R. Joyce and Grace Price Joyce. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the US Air Force. He retired from Delta Airlines with 36 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church of Stoneville. Sanford enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His enjoyable hobbies were, but not limited to, yard work, wildlife, history and watching westerns.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph R. Joyce, Jr., and Buddy Price Joyce.
Survivors include his loving partner of 13 years, Marie Cherwaty Burchell; sisters, Nancy Joyce Dunlap, of Charlottesville, VA, Nellie Joyce Callaway, of Kinston, Rejane Joyce Goode and husband, Eric, of Kannapolis and Brenda Joyce Allen, of Stoneville; and brother, Douglas Joyce and wife, Patsy, of Stoneville. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at his residence.
