Lineage— This is a county Down family, claiming descent from James Cleland, of that ilk, co. Lanark.

THE REV. JOHN CLELAND, prebendary of Armagh, b. 1755; m. 7 Sept. 1805, Esther, dau. and co-heiress of Samuel Jackson, of Stormont, by his wife, Margaret Vateau, only child and heiress of Paul-Peter-Iaaac Vateau, the descendant of a French Huguenot family, and d. 25 June, 1834, baring had issue,

I. SAMUEL-JACKSON, b. 1808; m. 3 Nov. 1831, Eliza, dau. of James Joyce, of Thomhill; and d. 20 May, 1312, leaving,

1 JOHN, now of Stormont Castle.

2 James-Vance, b. 7 May, 1838; capt. 3rd hussars; m. 4 Nov. 1862, Emily-Catherine, only dau. of Sir George Molyneux, Bart, of Castle-Dillon.

3 Robert-Stewart, b 17 June, 1840; lieut. 9th lancers.

4 Samuel-Frederick-Stewart, b. 24 Aug. 1842. 1 Margaret. n.

II. Robert-Stewart, b, 1810: d. under age.

III. Sarah-Frances, m. 6 July, 1831, Robert-Richard Tighe, Esq. of Woodstock, and d. 24 March, 1832, without issue. (He m. 2ndly, Louisa-Joan, widow of the Hon. Edward Wingfleld.) Seat— Stormont Castle, co. Down.
