Michael D Joyce 1945 – 2014

Michael passed away on February 10th at the age of 69 after a long battle with pneumonia. Michael was born in Long Beach, California and was a resident of Lake Arrowhead for almost 40 years.

After working in the oil industry and living for a time in Saudi Arabia, he returned to the States and in 1966 joined the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Michael went from a Deputy to Homicide Detective. Among Michael’s many accomplishments were Officer of the Year Award in 1980 while with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department; helped create the California State Gang Task Force and sat on that Board for many years; taught many anti-gang classes at the Riverside Academy of Justice; was promoted to the Riverside County District Attorneys Office, Bureau of Investigation in 1981, and was subsequently promoted to Assistant Chief Investigator where he remained until his retirement in 1996.

Michael was also a part-time College Instructor at the Riverside Community College, where he taught for over 30 years. Michael received the Outstanding Associate Faculty Service Award for Exceptional Service from the Riverside Community College in 2012. In addition, he created and was the Director of the “Criminalistics Learning Laboratory” at the Riverside Campus for students to actively participate and challenge themselves in the study of Science of Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation. He was fondly known by his students as the “CSI Professor”.

Michael was married to the love of his life, Lisa, for over 26 years. They travelled the world, and enjoyed life to the fullest. Michael is survived by his wife Lisa, his daughter Kelly and her husband Jim, and his son Michael Jr., and his wife Jill. In addition, Michael is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Ashley, Bobby, Joshua, Allison, James and Jenna and one great grandchild Ryder, his Aunt Annette Lalicker, Lisa’s parents Rosemarie and Henry Sartor who loved him like a son, and his favorite Welsh Corgi Sophie.

Please join us for a celebration and in honor of his life and his years of public service, on March 1, 2014 at Harvest Christian Fellowship, 6115 Arlington Avenue in Riverside, at Noon.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Michael D. Joyce Memorial Scholarship Fund at Riverside Community College Foundation, 4800 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, California 92506.
