The death of Mrs. Mary Ann Joyce,licensee of the Avoca Hotel, Walterhall,removed an old and respected resident of 42 years’ standing in Alt. Morgan.Born 67 years ago in County Clare, Ireland, Mrs. Joyce came to Australia when quite a young woman. She married in Mt. Morgan and her husband,the late Mr. T. Joyce, predeceased her 24 years ago.Mr. and Mrs. Joyce conducted the Great Northern Hotel in Gordon’s Lane, which at that time was quite a township. They also kept the . Erin Holm Hotel at the Dee Rush when that field was producing gold nuggets and attracting miners from all parts of Australia. Mrs. Joyce’s death was unexpected, although some time ago she had been very ill. The recent death of her eldest son, Michael, was a great blow to her.She is survived by two sons and a daughter — Messrs. William Joyce, well known cricketer and footballer, Thomas Joyce (Mt. Morgan railway stifV), and Mrs. G. M’Hugh, of Bundaberg. The funeral moved from St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Rockhampton, and was largely attended. Bishop Hayes conducted the last rites. Deceased was buried with her late husband and son at the Rockhampton cemetery. The late Mr. William McGrath, of Rockhampton, was an uncle of the deceased.
