Joseph M. Joyce of the Minooka section of Scranton died Friday in Passaic, N.J., after a long illness.

Born in Minooka, son of the late Edward and Matilda Jeffers Joyce, he was a lifelong member and very active parishioner of St. Joseph’s, Divine Mercy Parish. He was director of music for the parish for almost 30 years under the Rev. Joseph Corcoran, the Rev. Leo Burns and the Rev. Thomas McCann. He was educated in Minooka schools, graduating as the valedictorian of Minooka High School. Joe was a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Scranton. He was a member of the Medical Corps of the Navy serving inWorld War II. Before retirement, he taught in the Scranton School District for almost 40 years at South Scranton Junior High School, where he was the moderator of the audio-visual department. Joe was a member of the Minooka Notre Dame Club and American Legion Koch-Connolly Post 568. For years, he spent his summers as director of operations at Moran’s Irish Pub in Atlantic City, N.J. He was a member of the board of directors of the Whipo Investment Club and also a member of the Whipo Card Club. He was a faithful member of the Fathers and Friends of the IHM Novitiate at Marywood.

Joe was an award-winning quilt marker and quilt maker; he was always the perfect host at gatherings of family and friends for his famous parties.

Surviving are his long-term companion, Shirley Lawler, Passaic; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Gloria McDonough, Mary McAvaney and Catherine Clark; and a brother, Edward P. Joyce.

The wake will be Monday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Eagen-Hughes Funeral Home with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in Divine Mercy Parish at Church of St. Joseph, 312 Davis St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Francis Pauselli, pastor. Interment, parish cemetery.
