James W. “Jim” Joyce, 87, of Valencia, formerly of the Garfield neighborhood in Pittsburgh, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014. Born July 20, 1927, he was a loving son of William and Nora (Long) Joyce. He was the beloved husband of 63 years of Mary K. (O’Donnell) Joyce; dear father of James P. (Wyline) Joyce and the Rev. Michael J. Joyce, OFM Cap.; proud grandfather of Sherrianne (Jay) Haulbold and Colleen (Jerry) Moore; great-grandfather of Crystle and Caitlin Lavine, Erin Haulbold, William, Patrick and Michael Moore; and special dad of Nancy and Andy Gallick. Jim was preceded in death by his three brothers, Michael, John and William Joyce. James proudly served in the Navy during World War II. Jim later became a police officer for many years with the Pittsburgh Police. He was a 50-year member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Fort Pitt No. 1. Jim enjoyed fishing down in Florida, vacationing to Stone Harbor, N.J., and spending time with his family. Family will welcome friends from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME and CREMATION SERVICES LTD., 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown, PA 15007, where a vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Sepulcher Church, 1304 E. Cruikshank Road, Butler, PA 16002, where his son, the Rev. Michael J. Joyce, OFM Cap, will officiate. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Holy Sepulcher School and the Faith Formation Department, 1304 E. Cruikshank Road, Butler, PA 16002.
