 Francis R. Joyce, 89, of Chemung, New York passed on peacefully on May 26, 2010 at the Robert Packer Hospital just after the stroke of midnight, surrounded by his youngest and oldest daughters. Fran was born October 20, 1920 in Oswego, New York to the late John Joyce and Elsie Wolfe Joyce. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Oswego High School in Oswego, New York where he participated in varsity boxing and football. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the New York National Guard where he was assigned to Co. D – 108 th Infantry – 27 th Division. He was one of the two remaining members of Company D when he passed away. Fran was first stationed in Hawaii and was sent to Officers Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After receiving his commission he served in England until the invasion of Normandy where he came ashore at Utah Beach and served in the European Theatre until the end of the war. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant with honors, returned home, and enrolled in Oswego State Teacher’s College under the G.I. Bill. He majored in Industrial Arts and graduated in 1949. Upon graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Norma I. Barker, of Fulton, New York on June 11, 1947 at St. Mary’s Church in Oswego.

Fran taught industrial arts and drafting in Durham, North Carolina, Suitland, Maryland, and also held a position with the Department of Defense as a cartographic drafter in Washington, D.C. From there he moved to Elmira, New York to teach mathematics at the Elmira Correctional Facility. He left Elmira, and took a position at Waverly High School Elm Street where he taught drafting and served as the assistant principal under Mr. Clark Gage for 14 years. In 1968, the family moved to Candor, New York where Fran was hired as the principal of Candor High School. He retired in 1977 and returned to his 100 acre parcel in Chemung where he built his dream house, a log home, affectionately called “Mt. Therapy,” where he resided the remainder of his life.

Fran was predeceased by his parents, and two brothers, John and Thomas Joyce. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Norma; daughter Kimberly Joyce of Brockport; son Patrick Joyce and wife Barbara of Webster; son Mark Joyce and wife Leigh of Dryden; son Sean Joyce and wife Kathy of Chemung; daughter Maureen Joyce of Rochester; granddaughters Doria and Anni Joyce-Rocchio (Kimberly); granddaughter Darcy Joyce and grandson Thomas Joyce (Sean); and granddaughters Devin and Ainsley Joyce and grandsons Liam and Duran Joyce (Mark). Also, his sisters-in-law, Jane Joyce of Rockville, Maryland and Mildred Shear of Fulton, New York. Nieces and nephews John Owen Joyce, M.D. of Virginia; Virginia Ann Howard of California; Mary Susan Ridings of Virginia; John David Joyce of Virginia; and Jacqueline Crumm of Maryland.

Fran enjoyed teaching,woodworking, building, stamp and antique collecting, hunting, storytelling, reading, watching football, and spending time with his friends and family. He was an animal lover and enjoyed his pets. He was always willing to help those in need and was a very generous man.

Memorial donations or remembrances may be made to Stray Haven in Barton, New York (Fran’s favorite charity).

A time for gathering with family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010 at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York. The celebration of Francis’s Life will be held Saturday, May 29, 2010, 12:00 p.m. at St. James Church Blessed Trinity Parish, Waverly, New York. Those wishing may send a sympathy message of remembrance for Francis’s family.
