Espie “Butch” Joyce 1944 – 2012

MADISON — Espie “Butch” Joyce, Jr., 68, of 6257 NC Highway 704, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Hospice Home of Rockingham County.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2012, at The Episcopal Church of the Messiah, 114 Second Avenue, Mayodan, with the Reverend Robert Rachal officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military rites provided by the North Carolina National Guard and Masonic rites by Dan River Lodge #129.

Mr. Joyce was born March 6, 1944, in Rockingham County, to the late Espie Melvin Joyce, Sr. and Lena Smith Joyce. He served in the US Army Special Forces (1964-1970) proudly wearing the “Green Beret.” “Butch” was a 32 Degree Mason, member of Dan River Lodge #129, and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah. He was Operations Manager and owner of AUA, Inc. insurance agency and a founding partner of Utility Services. He served for 16 years as national president of the Vintage Aircraft Association (VAA), a division of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), EAA Board of Directors member Emeritus, past president of the EAA Chapter #8 and VAA Chapter #3. He was also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association since 1955 and member of the QB Greensboro Hanger. “Butch” was the current national director of VAA. He was inducted into the Vintage Air Craft Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Personal interests were aviation, flying and restoring numerous airplanes and RV traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Semler Joyce, of the home; his daughters, Sara Elizabeth Joyce, of Madison (daughter, Anna Elizabeth Holland) and Kara Wynne Joyce of Roanoke, VA, (children, Georgia and Henry Robinson); stepson, Robert Kamsch (Myline), of Greensboro (children, Michaela and Michael); stepdaughter, Lisa Otey (Mark), of Winston-Salem, (children, Steven Hunter Otey, Cara McCann (Marc) and Lauren Church (daughter, Addison)); sisters, Janice Philipp, of Winston-Salem (children, Tim, Scott, and Jeff) and Frances Garrou of Virginia Beach (children, Doug, Kelly and Rebecca).

The family will receive friends at the home following the services on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, 2150 NC Highway 65, Reidsville, NC 27320 or Vintage Aircraft Association, PO Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI 54903.

Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family.
