Donald J Joyce 1932 – 2012

Donald J. Joyce, 80, of North Scranton, died Tuesday evening at VNA Hospice at Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness. His wife is the former Yvonne “Nonnie” Ezerskes. The couple would have been married 50 years on Oct. 27.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Thomas J. and Sarah Gunning Joyce, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He was an Army veteran of the 109th Infantry 28th Division, serving in Germany during the Korean War. Before retirement, he was employed as a serviceman and repairman for the vending industry. He was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was a Eucharistic minister at Holy Rosary, caretaker for St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Throop, and was also a member of the VFW and Disabled American Veterans.

He was a caring and giving man who had a deep Roman Catholic faith and attended St. Ann’s Novena every year until the time of his death.

Also surviving are three sons, John Joyce and wife, Katie, Eynon; Thomas, Scranton; and Brian Joyce and companion, Grace Ann Hogan, Throop; two grandchildren, Donny and John Joyce; a niece and two nephews; and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Donald; a brother, Toby; and a sister-in-law, Shirley.

The family would like to thank the staff of VNA Hospice for the compassionate care and kindness, and also the emergency room and ICU at Geisinger Community Medical Center.

The funeral will be Friday from the Edward Knight O’Donnell Funeral Home, 323 William St., Scranton, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

Viewing, today, 5 to 8 p.m. Friends attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., Scranton, PA 18508.
