Colonel Jean K Joyce 1926 – 2013

JOYCE, Col. Jean K., long-time Tampa resident, passed away on January 1, 2013 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home of Slidell, Louisiana. Col. Joyce was born in 1926 in East St. Louis, Ill., graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1946, and earned his Master’s Degree from Columbia University in 1955. During his career in the U.S. Army, Col. Joyce saw action in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded many medals including the Legion of Merit, Korean Service Medal (6 Battle Stars), Vietnam Service Medal (3 Battle Stars), and the Joint Service Commendation Medal, before retiring in Tampa in 1972. In 1952, he married Dorothy Foster Joyce, his wife of nearly 50 years, until she passed away in 2001. Col. Joyce is survived by his second wife, Ann Joyce of Tampa; and his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Marilena Joyce; and three grandchildren, Jessica, Emily, and Jeffrey Joyce, of Slidell, Louisiana. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and his many, many friends in Tampa and around the world. Relatives and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass on January 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church followed by a reception. Burial will be at 1:30 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to The Children’s Home, Inc., 10909 Memorial Hwy., Tampa, FL 32599.
