Beverly Roakes (Holman) Joyce 1926 – 2006

Brunswick – Beverly Roakes (Holman) Joyce, 80, of Baribeau Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 20, at her home.

She was born in Auburn, May 20, 1926, the daughter of Merritt and Lillian Pitman Roakes. She was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of 1944, and earned an art education degree from the University of Maine Portland-Gorham in 1968. In 1948, she married Howard Holman. They were married for 19 years. She later married Joseph “Jabber” Joyce in 1971. He died in 1987.

Upon her graduation from UMPG, she became a member of the professional staff at the YWCA of Greater Portland from where she retired in 1989. In her years there, she served as the youth activities director, where she advised the 7-11 Council and chaperoned many 7-11 Club dances. Later in her career she was publicity and public relations director for the YWCA. She was very proud to be a lifetime member of the YWCA.

She was active in the United Methodist Church, Brunswick. She was a member of the Kaleidoscope Quilters, Pine Tree Quilters Guild, and the Maine Public Relations Council. She volunteered for many years at St. Paul’s Soup Kitchen in Brunswick, as well as at the Walker Art Museum, Bowdoin College. She was also very active in programs at People Plus, Brunswick.

She is survived by a daughter, Rosanne (Holman) Graef, and her husband, Steven, of Portland; a stepson, Richard Joyce, and his wife, Jeanne, of Cary, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Patty Crafts, and her husband, Stephen, of Cape Elizabeth; and two brothers, Ellis Roakes of Lakeside, Calif., and Robert Roakes, and his wife, Natalie, of Oxford.
